Patrice Catan Alberty – Bio
For over three decades award-winning entrepreneur and bridal designer, Patrice Catan-Alberty has built a name in the wedding industry that is synonymous with hard work, integrity and style. She has earned numerous accolades and business awards, including the Gold Award for Best Bridal Retail, every year since 2003. As founder of Catan Bridal, once the largest bridal salon in the nation, Patrice has serviced tens of thousands of brides and has also been a featured speaker and expert at bridal events across the country.
Catan credits her career successes to her father, Pat Catanzarite, a pioneer in the crafts industry who opened his first small artificial flower store in 1954 which eventually grew into Pat Catan’s Craft Centers, one of the country’s largest importers, manufacturers and wholesalers of crafts and craft-related products, now with thirty-five stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In February 2016, the Pat Catan Craft Centers were sold to Michaels.
Inspired by her father, Patrice began working with him at the age of 14 and used to take the bus after school to work with him three days a week and every weekend. She learned from her father the principles of hard work and dedication—the same values and traditions that she still carries with her today.
In 1980, Patrice started her journey in the bridal business with just three original dress designs. By 1988, she approached her father with a new idea to open a bridal salon and with his enthusiastic support, she launched Catan Bridal in 1990. It wasn’t long before Patrice started expanding and by 2003, she grew into a 54,000 square foot space with 65 dressing rooms and 21 seamstresses—becoming the largest bridal salon in the United States and selling about 6,000+ garments per year.
Over the course of her career, Patrice has sold at least 60,000 wedding dresses, 150,000 bridesmaid dresses and thousands of prom, special occasion and children’s dresses. She loves seeing girls that she had sold a prom dress to come back to her years later for their wedding gown.
After 32 years in the industry Patrice Catan planned to retire, only to realize it wasn’t for her. Following a very brief departure, Patrice quickly realized that “my love for bridal will never go away,” and her passion instantly fueled her to use this opportunity to reinvent her services as a bridal designer with a new salon concept.
In September 2017, Patrice opened the doors to the new Catan Fashions bridal salon in Broadview Heights, Ohio. With so many retailers closing their doors, Patrice wanted to be sure that the traditions and experiences of shopping for a bridal gown were not lost and in turn, designed the salon’s business model to focus solely on the bride while offering a custom-tailored experience. With the new salon, Patrice also introduced her own private label collection and the “Mine by Design” Build-A-Dress custom design concept, allowing brides to find exactly what they are looking for.
With decades of experience working with brides every day of the week, Patrice knows exactly how a dress should be designed and constructed. She has educated herself to be the top in the bridal industry with unparalleled knowledge and an impeccable reputation and when it came to reinventing her salon, she designed it specifically to not only appeal to today’s bride, but also to share her years of knowledge educating brides about fabrics, embellishments and dress construction to allow the best possible shopping experience.
Patrice turns 69 years young in July 2018 and works seven days a week. She wishes “to have 20 extra years. I love working with brides so much and I am excited to see how wedding fashion will continue to evolve.”
In addition to her love of bridal, Patrice is dedicated to keeping her father’s legacy alive through the Pat Catan Foundation, a philanthropic organization he started for children. Catan lives in Strongsville, Ohio with her family and in her spare time enjoys spending time with her nine grandchildren.
